Highland Village Museum

Highland Village Museum

The Highland Village Museum, also known as Baile nan Gàidheal, is a living history museum focused on preserving the Gaelic culture and heritage of the Scottish settlers in the region. The museum includes exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and historic buildings that represent a traditional Highland Scottish village. We experience how these Gaelic settlers adapted to life in Cape Breton—their farming techniques, fishing activities on Bras d'Or Lake, building methods, and ways of using local resources.

This is a historical example of how the Gaelic community relied on and interacted with the local environment. This kind of resilience, called social-ecological resilience, means humans and the environment deal with disturbances, adjust to changes, and even transform while keeping important functions and supporting well-being. The Gaelic settlers' story is one of strength and adaptability. They reshaped their way of life over generations to fit Nova Scotia's soils, climate, seasons, and resources while preserving their identity.
